WebAfter a spiritual vision, a Paiute Indian shaman named Wavoka (or Jack Wilson) began the Ghost Dance movement. Wavoka taught the Indians that by performing the Ghost Dance they would be reunited with those who had died (entered the ghost world), and he proclaimed that by living righteously the white people would be driven out. WebThe Ghost Dance was started in 1889 by Wovoka, who was also known as Jack Wilson, a Paiute living near Walker Lake, in Mason Valley, Nevada. His father had been a shaman and medicine man, recognised by the community as a spiritual leader. From childhood Wovoka claimed to hear voices and see visions.
