Im not using the guide plates I install a hardened head bolt washer the same thickness as the guide plate under the stud. I almost always use ARP studs. The rocker will bind on the taper just before the bolt when you go to install the rockers. So you have to lower the whole assembly to get the proper clearance under the rocker.
