I also got my hans on a pair of older p/n 6299 holley 390 cfm carbs. They are suppose to have a leaner Idle circuit than the 8007 carb. Get it to where its exposed about 1/32 of an inch then put the carb back on. With that you'll know how much more you can turn it in if necessary. Not much . The backfire on hard acceleration is almost always pump shot related and there is not 1 correct answer.
