Common name for euglena

WebEuglena viridis is a freshwater, single cell, mixotroph microalgae bearing a secondary chloroplast. [3] Their chloroplast is bounded by three layers of membrane without a nucleomorph. [4] Normally, it is 40–65 μm long, slightly bigger than other well-known Euglena species: Euglena gracilis. [5] Taxonomy [ edit] In 1881, Georg Klebs made a primary taxonomic distinction between green and colorless flagellate organisms, separating photosynthetic from heterotrophic euglenoids. The latter (largely colorless, shape-changing uniflagellates) were divided among the Astasiaceae and the Peranemaceae, while flexible green euglenoids were generally assigned to the genus Euglena.
